Alert the media I’m actually tissue fitting!!

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 5 Comments Filed Under: Blog, Fabric

This spring I have a couple of weddings to attend.  The first wedding is in Vancouver, Canada and my sister will be doing the wedding photography and I will be the reflector holder extraordinaire! The second wedding is in May and I have been asked by the bride to do the guest book/gifts.  All this means I need to look extra spiffy in a new dress!
Now, you might be tired of “me + voile = love”, and I promise to start mixing it up but seriously you better get your voile before I use it all up!! This particular one has been whispering sweet nothings in my ear for the last few weeks so I think I need to use it! This is a pattern that I’ve had for the last few years, and I think it has potential to be really cute! The model’s hair and facial expression was so awful that I had to crop her head off (just encase you were wondering!).

All this brings me to tissue fitting! I had never done it before a few minutes ago! I was inspired to try it by this blog tutorial by Gertie’s blog for better sewing .  By the way if you are interested in dressmaking this is a great blog.  I was also inspired to try tissue fitting because I’m sick of my blind faith in these patterns! It’s time for me to wake up and realize just because I sorta match the measurements of a size, doesn’t mean its going to fit me right! My tissue fitting discoveries did not come as a surprise to me because I have a narrow rip cage and broad sholders.  I redused the sholder seam to 1/4″ and tapered in the side seams to fit my rips.  Vwa LA! My pattern fitting problems fixed!
This whole process took some extra time but I did it in the name of becoming a better seamstress! Plus it’s part of what makes sewing your own clothes so cool! You are making something to custom fit your body, and that’s more than we can say about our store bought clothing!
I’m very excited to finish this dress and show y’all! I’m hoping when I’m done it will be “wedding worthy”!
xoxo Madeline
p.s. please notice Sushi, the cutest kitty boy laying on my bed… on top of my new sweater (of course!!)

Lovely dress. The dress I wore in Jake and Emily's wedding had a similar top and she added a huge crazy bow and cumberbund type thing at the waist. Was pretty cute. And I practically had to be sewn into the thing–so I hear ya on patterns/sizes/etc. not being correct. Good for you for moving on to tissue fitting : )

Haha! What is this tissue fitting you speak of?! I have three dress patterns for this summer and I've been seriously contemplating tissue fitting them… the fabric is so much more fun to work with tho! :-) But, I know it will save me some headaches in the long run… right?!

Wow – this is a bit too much for me – since the extend of my sewing ability reaches drawstring bags and quilts. I think I need a class on sewing clothing – cuz I am even too scared to make pajama pants!!! I cant wait to see it done. Having clothes that actually fit correctly is huge, and almost unavailable if you dont have serious money. I was at Anthro Sunday and tried on this dress – it fit me like a glove. I was like – huh… so this is how they're supposed to fit!!!! I have sooo much to learn!

The dress is THANKFULLY coming together great with all these alterations! but I'm going to knock on my wooden desk just in case… hehehe! I have the top part put together but I'm still not 100% sure how I'm going to alter the gathered waist band to fit the top. If it doesnt work out I'll have a nicely fitting crop top!
